5 tips on how to protect your luggage when travelling

When travelling in different parts of the world you need to think about the security of your luggage. Preventive action enables you to use the personal things you have taken with you. You can also be sure that gifts you have bought for your loved ones are still in your suitcase and safe when you arrive at home.

We have some tips for you on how to travel without worrying about losing your luggage.

1. Use a TSA (Transportation Security Association of the U.S.) certified lock.

This lock has, in addition to the security code, a special master key which enables the security control (TSA and other airports' security controls) open your luggage without damaging the lock.

All checked- in luggage is screened in order to avoid hazardous substances-equipment being taken on board. Despite advanced technology, sometimes luggage still needs to be physically inspected.

2. Take cable ties with you.

It may happen that some of your locks breaks down or you need to lock other compartments as well but you don't have an extra lock for this. Cable ties suit perfectly for locking bag compartments. Insert the cable tie through the loops of the zipper and pull it tight. This helps prevent small thefts that may take place when your attention is scattered. This also helps prevent small thefts that occur during the handling of your luggage (an airport employee can easily slip his/her hand into your bag and steal the first thing that he/she can get his/her hand on). To open the cable tie, you have to cut it.

3. Use a cable lock for locking your luggage while being on the train or in a waiting lounge.

We all tend to doze off during a long train journeys or in waiting lounges. Lock your luggage to a chair or post in order to avoid somebody stealing it by just taking it with.

4. Mark your luggage so that it stands out.

It's rather sad when you discover in the hotel or at home that you have taken a wrong suitcase from the airport. Even worse when somebody has taken your suitcase by mistake because your suitcase could not been distinguished from other similar ones.

Use a bright coloured suitcase label or just tie a colourful scarf around the handle of your suitcase. This way your luggage is easily distinguishable for you as well as others.

5. Do not pack your valuables (computer, camera, electronic devices, jewellery, etc.) into check-in luggage.

This kind of items may cause a temptation to break your luggage locks no matter how securely you have locked them. What's worse, this can result in your luggage getting lost.

In airports thousands of suitcases get lost every year. Most of them are never found as they have been smuggled out by organised thieves. Thanks to the scanning they have the information on the content of your suitcase.
